One of the best musicals in the country right now, is making Cleveland’s Playhouse Square its current stop! It really is amazing to think how far Cleveland has come in recent years, but so often we forget we still support on of the best theatrics scene’s in the States and it’s in our backyard… This fun musical is a collage of rapping, and more traditional musical choices, depicting the life and events of Alexander Hamilton. There are many great reviews already out there about the performance’s so far here in Cleveland.
Let’s touch on something more exciting and fun history. Upon the completion of the Constitution of the United States and with a weekend before it would be signed, the Founding Father’s thought it would be a good idea to step out for a bite and a sip. This may have looked much more like a Frat party than any formal get together, with estimates of the tab for all 55 delegates tallying around $15,000 by current standards… Ugh, can we say banger!? At around $270 a head, that is a heck of a lot of booze, interested in what they drank?
60 bottles of Claret
54 bottles of Madeira
22 Porters
12 beers
8 bottles whiskey
8 ciders
7 punch bowls
Let’s put this into perspective, pretending every unit to be the same 12 ounce bottle beer drinkers are accustomed too. That would have each delegate having approximately 3 beers, with a couple deviants having a fourth, which is nothing crazy. Taking a step back and realizing the Claret and Madeira were actually very close in size to our current bottles of wine and at a more typical 10-16% abv, same going for the Madeira. We can then toss a couple shots onto each person as eight bottles should yield approximately 18 shots per bottle accounting for spillage and over-pours. Lumping the remaining items together, our estimate is about two bottles of wine, 2-3 shots, and a beer or two…
Now, as Germans, we are all about tossing back a few steins though we can be picky about how its brewed (think Reinheitsgebot, aka Bavarian Purity Law). We would however, never condone this sort of epic swashbuckling as the hangover that must follow a bender like this must last well into a second day… Looking back at finalizing the Constitution, we can see how the excitement of such a momentous event might get a group so rowdy that we are talking about it some two hundred years later… Be sure to stop in and sip on one of the Hamilton play themed cocktails we will be serving up throughout the play series. We won’t be serving up the same lot these deviants, I mean Delegates, put back.
As always, Prost!
